Elbow Pain
The elbow joint is a complex hinge-type joint that connects the upper arm (humerus) to the forearm (ulna). The forearm also consists of another bone, the radius. The actual elbow joint (ulnohumeral) allows for the elbow to bend and straighten. The radius and ulna form two joints, one at the top and one at the bottom of the forearm, which allow for rotational movements of the forearm, including facing the palm up (supination) and facing the palm down (pronation).
Other structures include ligaments, such as the radial collateral ligament and ulnar collateral ligament, that stabilize the joint. Bursa are also present, which are fluid filled sacs that cushion the joint and reduce fraction.
Common Elbow and Forearm Injuries Include:
• Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
• Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis)
• Bursitis, IE of the olecranon bursa
• Bicep tendon rupture
• Fractures
• Dislocations
• Ulnar collateral ligament tears, which often require Tommy John’s surgery
• Strains of muscles
• Cubital tunnel syndrome
Physical therapy is used for patients experiencing elbow and forearm pain, with a comprehensive assessment performed at the first visit to determine the nature of the condition and what functional limitations are present.
Treatment is individualized based on the injury and the patient’s goals. It will typically include manual therapy, mobility and stretching exercises, modalities as needed and lifestyle advice for overuse injuries. Eventually PT will focus on strengthening and return to prior activity level.
Physical therapy is used for post-op patients as well, such as after Tommy John’s surgery or a Tenex procedure.
